Call for Submissions @ Quotidian: A Literary Magazine

This year, in addition with my studies, blogging for ‘moon child’, editing at The University Paper, Glasgow and editing as the new lifestyle editor at CultNoise magazine, I will also be an assistant editor at Quotidian, a literary magazine for students studying in Scotland.

As a fiction writer, I have found it hard to find literary magazines, journals and other outlets that I would like to contribute my work to as suitable publications in Scotland are a bit few and far between.

But luckily, I found out about Quotidian last year when the first issue was launched and now I will be helping to sift through and pick out the best short stories, poems and pieces of creative nonfiction submissions for Issue 2 which will be published online, and select pieces will make it into the print edition too.

The theme of Quotidian (definition: of or occurring every day; daily) is the ordinary and the everyday, and we are encourgaing submissions from budding writers and storytellers studying in Scotland.

With my own personal writing style, I tend to lean towards the bizarre and gothic (my story ‘Ivy Moon’ published on Short Story Sunday, for example). So, I think writing bits and pieces based on Quotidian writing prompts and helping them to edit submissions this year will really push me to become a better and more versatile writer, and help me to refine my editing skills.

Here is a little bit more about Quotidian…

Quotidian magazine is…

…an exciting new literary magazine coming out of Glasgow, Scotland. The brainchild of creative writing postgraduates at the University of Strathclyde, Quotidian is a student-led project to produce an online and biannual print magazine for the whole of Scotland.

Our publications feature ‘the everyday’ in fiction, creative nonfiction and poetry written by writers studying across Scotland. We are also proud to showcase a handful of work by student photographers and sketch artists, which compliment our stories and poems.

Here’s how you can get involved…

Quotidian is accepting fiction and nonfiction submissions now! The deadline for submissions is December 1, 2015. To submit a piece, all you have to do is email your piece, with your type of submission (short story, poem, creative nonfiction etc.) as the subject line, to:

Please read the full submission guidlines here!

If you’re still unsure about the kind of work Quotidian publishes, you can read Issue 1 pieces on the website for inspiration. You can also keep up to date with all the latest writing prompts, information, inspiration, news and much more on the Quotidian Facebook and Twitter (@quotidianmag) accounts.

For all the writers out there who may be feeling a little dubious about submitting their work, I completely understand. Often, putting forward something you’ve put your heart and soul into can make you feel quite vulnerable. But, the only way to get better, to grow as a writer and to get published is to submit. So, head to the Quotidian website and get writing!
